During Tuesday’s Picayune City Council meeting, the council presented Percy Manning with the key to the city in recognition of his achievements as a fullback for George Washington Carver High School. Manning was part of the team’s 64-game winning streak from 1958 to 1964, a state record and the third-best in the United States.
Mayor Jim Luke stated that the recognition was long overdue, noting, “It’s time.”
Manning, who wore the number 33, was accompanied by classmates, including Charles Lowe, who brought Manning’s original jersey to display.
Manning accepted the key to the city in the presence of his family, friends, teammates, and classmates.
The council also acknowledged the community’s participation in opening the new police station. Mayor Luke noted the support from nearby communities, including Berrywood, where Blue Line flags were displayed.
