Poplarville’s softball team loses on the road

The Lady Hornets’ softball team lost its first district game of the season 4-2 Monday night against Sumrall.
Head Coach Jonathan Ray said Manya Gilmore went 2-for-4 and Rakiya Travis was 1-for-4.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when scores by Gilmore and Kayleigh Netto gave Poplarville a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Hornets’ lead was short lived after Sumrall’s Lilly Robertson, Shaylee Ingram, Abagail Thexton and Cameron Graves scored in the bottom of the sixth.
Those runs helped Sumrall eventually win the game.
Poplarville’s Gracie Raby pitched for 5 2/3 innings, allowing two hits, four runs and striking out three batters.
For the Lady Bobcats, Thexton, Robertson and Kaitlyn Russell each batted 1-for-3.
Russell also had two RBIs on the night.
Sumrall’s Brianna McCray pitched for 5 1/3 innings and allowed two hits, two runs and struck out four batters. Also, Karley Russell pitched for 1 1/3 innings and allowed one hit and struck out one batter.
The Lady Hornets (10-4, 3-1 Region 7-4A) will play its next two games at home against Lawrence County. The first game will take place Thursday at 7 p.m. Another game is scheduled for March, 29, at 6 p.m.
