1964

On this day, J.P. Walker replaced J.W. Owen as Pearl River County Sheriff. Walker’s first action was announcing that people residing in the county couldn’t operate motor vehicles with an out-of-state license.

1974

On this day, the Picayune City Council decided to gather it’s own figures on an asphalt plant. The council had a Gulf Coast company write a report on operating the plant.

1995

On this day, the Picayune School Board, upon the recommendation of Superintendent Bob Lumpkin, voted to add soccer as a sport at Picayune High School.

On this day, a 61-year-old Picayune man, Thomas Duffy, was involved in a fatal accident on Interstate 59. Duffy was a law enforcement officer in Louisiana.

1986

On this day, some customers of the Pearl River Central Water Association noticed an stronger than normal chlorine smell coming from their drinking water.

On this day, a 36-year-old Long Beach man, Will B. Williams, was found dead in the backyard of his aunt’s house in Picayune after apparently being shot to death.

1990

On this day, the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department was given a second grant to continue funding the Pearl River Basin Narcotics Task Force in the county. The grant allowed the operations to continue for an additional 10 months. The task force was started by Sheriff Lorance Lumpkin the later part of 1980.
