The Torrence Family Schoolhouse 4-H Club hosted a community Thanksgiving dinner Thursday afternoon.

The event took place in the storm shelter in Poplarville and over two hundred people were in attendance.

“This is our fourth year hosting this event and I enjoy every second of it,” Torrence Family Schoolhouse 4-H Club Director Kim Torrence said. “We host different fundraisers throughout the year in an effort to collect funds for today’s event. Our goal is to feed everyone in the community but we definitely want to make sure we feed the senior citizens in the area.”

The 26 members of the Torrence Family Schoolhouse 4-H Club collected over $2,000 to purchase supplies needed for the Thanksgiving dinner.

“Several vegetables that (were) served, such as the lettuce and cabbage, have been grown by our club members here in Poplarville,” Mississippi State University-Pearl River County Extension Agent Eddie Smith said.

According to its website, 4-H Club involves kids in hands-on projects in fields such as health, science, agriculture and citizenship.

“We focus on team leadership skills and to give back and be involved in the community,” Smith said. “There are many people in the community that are unable to have a Thanksgiving dinner, so this is a perfect way to make a contribution to our community.”

During the dinner, kids and parents helped distribute the meals to everyone in attendance.

“Every year, we have more people attend our Thanksgiving dinner and I simply want to say thank you to everyone who has helped to put our event together,” Torrence said.
