Commercial open house should have drawn a crowd

If you’ve ever looked for a house, you may have participated in an event that is very effective in showing a house to as many people as possible in a short amount of time, an open house.

It’s a great way for realtors to show off their inventory, and for potential homebuyers to see a number of homes all in one day.

Thursday, local realtors took that marketing strategy and applied it to the commercial side of the market.

During a two-hour span, realtors and potential business owners had an opportunity to see four worthwhile commercial listings in one day.

The listings ranged from a unit facing Memorial Boulevard where RadioShack used to be, to a building that was formerly used as a pediatric clinic in the middle of town.

The idea was to give buyers or renters a variety of options, while more importantly, promoting our town as a place to set up shop.

With such a sound idea, it was a bit disappointing to see that the event was not heavily attended.

As the Item toured each listing, few if any other people came out to get a glimpse of these buildings that could be the next revenue venue for a hard working entrepreneur’s venture.

If our local leaders really want to promote Picayune and Pearl River County and enhance our area’s economic viability, they too need to do their part by making an appearance at events like these.

It was sad to hear some of the realtors say that due to the limited turnout, consideration of holding another commercial open house was not on the table.

We at the Item hope the local realtors don’t get too discouraged by the lukewarm reception to this innovative attempt to market our town, and make every attempt to bolster our economy.
