POPLARVILLE — One current member of the Pearl River Community College baseball team and two former Wildcats made news this week on their respective baseball fields.
PRCC rising sophomore Simon Landry was named to the North Division All-Star team in the Valley Baseball League, a summer wood-bat league for undergraduates.
Landry, a first baseman from Ponchatoula, La., plays for the Strasburg (Va.) Express. He will compete in the VBL All-Star Game, scheduled for Sunday at Veteran’s Memorial Park Eagle Field on the campus of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va.
In games through July 2, the Express’ most recent game, Landry was batting .310 with two home runs and 13 RBIs. Landry led the Wildcats in most offensive categories in the 2017 season, including 14 homers, 46 RBIs and 13 doubles, along with a .304 batting average.
Elsewhere, former Wildcats Braxton Lee and Zach Clark were each named Player of the Week in their respective leagues, Lee in the Southern League and Clark in the Pioneer League.
Lee, who played for Pearl River in 2012-13 before moving on to Ole Miss, was recently traded from the Tampa Bay Rays to the Miami Marlins and assigned to the Marlins’ Class AA affiliate in Jacksonville, Fla.
In his first week as an outfielder for Jacksonville, Lee was 12 for 21 (.571), with a home run, a triple, two doubles and six RBIs. He is currently on a 13-game hitting streak and he leads the SL with a .337 average.
Clark, who played for the Wildcats in 2016, is an outfielder for the Helena (Mont.) Brewers, a Class A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. Last week, Clark went 9 of 22 (.409) with three homers, a triple, a double and 12 RBIs.
