Today’s lifestyle column will be my last for the Picayune Item, as my final day working for the paper will be Friday.
Any life-changing decision is almost always difficult for me to make and this one was no different.
However, after much prayer and contemplation, I have decided to embark on a familiar yet new adventure at another newspaper.
But a large piece of my heart will always remain in Pearl River County.
From the moment I began working at the Item, members of the community welcomed me in a way I never could have imagined.
When I transitioned to lifestyle writer, I was introduced to a group of strong, talented, selfless, caring and all-around good people.
I was humbled and honored to sit in a family’s home and listen as they explained the struggles associated with battling an incurable or rare illness. I will also remember the stories about members of local civic organizations and the amazing works they perform every day.
I can’t count the number of times I’ve walked the halls of the schools in all three of the county’s school districts to cover a story. I’ve met some amazing educators and students who I know will continue to pursue great things. Good things are happening at all three school districts.
I would also like to thank officers with the Picayune and Poplarville Police Departments and Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department for the positive working relationship.
Thank you to the elected leaders in Poplarville, Picayune and Pearl River County for your cooperation and a dedication to your constituents that I have witnessed time and time again.
When you start writing a column like this, there are so many people you want to thank. In reality, that would take up the entire paper and more.
My career here has certainly been a memorable one and I’ve learned a good deal about myself and what I’m capable of.
In May, I was proud to accept my first career-related award from the Mississippi-Louisiana Associated Press Media Editors. My story about Rossie and Brittney Creel of Poplarville won second place. I couldn’t be more proud and grateful to share this honor with this special family.
I’m excited for this new chapter in my career and am ready to grow as a reporter and writer.
