A resident of Dumas Bailey Road is calling for road maintenance to repair reoccurring problems.

Sterling Mitchell, a resident of Dumas Bailey Road, reached out to the Picayune Item about a lack of permanent fixes to the county road.

“The road is old, it’s the same problem two to three months later because of vehicular traffic,” said Mitchell.

Some of the problems with the road include reoccurring potholes, flooding, and deterioration, said Mitchell.

“If we get hard rain for 30-60 minutes the road floods,” said Mitchell. “There are a couple areas where the land is higher than the road and the water flows over like a stream.”

Pearl River County maintains the roughly three-mile long road located off Highway 43 North.

“A few of the residents and myself have called the road maintenance division at the county in Poplarville,” said Mitchell.

When the Picayune Item spoke with county road manager Charlie Schielder on Friday, he said he had no knowledge of problems with the road, but would send a crew out there next week. He also said that no recent work had been done on the road.

Mitchell is calling for the county to evaluate the road and repave it. The last time he called the county was about a month ago, said Mitchell, yet there has been no maintenance done.

At one point, the road follows an s-curve where the right edge of the road is starting to deteriorate, said Mitchell.

Mitchel added that he believes it has been six to eight months since the country road crew has been to the area.

The Pearl River County Road Department is currently working on a road plan for next year, said Schielder.

The county asks that residents call the department if there is an issue with one of the roads.

“We do depend on the public and the taxpayers to tell us about any problems,” said Schielder.

Charlie Schielder can be reached at cschielder@pearlrivercounty.net or 601-795-8038.
