Picayune PD summer camp raising funds for benches at splash pad

Last year, youth from Picayune Police Department’s summer camp raised funds to put toward the purchase a wheelchair accessible swing at Friendship Park.
On December 10, 2015, the same day the swing was unveiled, officials broke ground on the city’s splash pad, which is now up and running.
However, Picayune Police Department Captain Theresa Milar said she’s noticed a few things about the newest amenity.
“I’ve seen parents at the splash pad standing or walking around watching their kids play,” she said. “There’s no where for them to sit.”
Each year, officials with the police department’s summer camp encourage participants to give back to their community, Milar said.
Last year the effort focused on the swing. This year the students, summer camp volunteers, city employees and Picayune Police Department’s officers will participate in a bowl-a-thon to raise money for benches and/or picnic tables, which will be placed around the splash pad, Milar said.
The bowl-a-thon will be held this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Pine Tree Lanes.
Milar said she is seeking sponsorships. Donors can sponsor a game, pledge a certain amount per bowling pin or donate any amount they want.
“We are hoping to purchase the metal-type benches or tables that can be installed in the ground, like the type they have at Jack Read Park,” Milar said.
