Tuesday, in addition to discussing the city’s plans for the green space downtown, the Poplarville Board of Aldermen decided to move forward with an appraisal of the Poplarville Police Department’s station and engage Hattiesburg’s Walker and Associates Engineers help to provide engineering information regarding the city’s consideration of a bond to pay for street repaving.
During the May 3 meeting, the board discussed problems with the current police station, which includes issues with the A/C compressor and other major electrical problems.
Tuesday, the board approved appraiser Cecil Johnson’s quote to conduct a cost and market appraisal of the facility, Poplarville City Clerk Jane O’Neal said. It will determine the value of the building and surrounding property should the city decide to sell it in the future, O’Neal added. The cost of this appraisal is $1,800.
City officials plan to possibly combine the fire and police department within the fire department’s facility, O’Neal said.
In another matter, the board approved engaging the services of Walker and Associates Engineers to assist attorney Lucien Bourgeois of Butler, Snow, O’Mara, Stevens, Cannada PLLC of Ridgeland with pursuance of a bond to repave city streets, O’Neal said.
At the March 2 board meeting, City Engineer Jason Lamb of Walker and Associates presented the board with a detailed evaluation of every street the city is responsible to maintain, with a list of those in the worst condition. There are 25 miles of city roads in the city needing repair, Lamb told the board.
The next board meeting will be held on June 7 at 5 p.m.
