POPLARVILLE — The Poplarville boys won their first home basketball game of the season in a 60-33 blowout against Pearl River Central. The win improves the Hornets to 3-0 and the Blue Devils fall to 0-3 on the season.
Turnovers plagued the Blue Devils immensely with 25 total turnovers. In the first half they turned it over 18 times, many of those turnovers resulting in easy breakaway layups for senior guard Dekevian Coleman who had 10 points on the night and senior guard Zack Taylor who had 13 points. The Hornets pressured the ball constantly on the perimeter never allowing the Blue Devils to get comfortable running their offense. At the half the Hornets led 33-9.
Hornets Head Coach Chareck Cable said they pride themselves on defense.
“That’s our thing. We try to hang our hat on our defense. That’s the biggest thing for me. Sometimes your shooting might be off, but you have to bring defense every night. So that’s the biggest thing for all these guys, it’s defense first. Unity, and then it’s defense,” Cable said.
Poplarville was able to play all their guys with a well-balanced scoring attack—12 Hornets scored on the night.
“It’s a good win for us, it’s always good to get a win. We still need to execute better in what we did, but some of our younger guys got a chance to play and our football guys just came back in so they have to get a little rust off them,” Cable said.
PRC is still without some of their athletes who are currently playing in the Mississippi state playoffs for the PRC football team.
