Next Saturday, Poplarville’s Teen Challenge of Mississippi will host their second annual Run Baby Run 5K-trail run at Picayune’s Crosby Arboretum.
Teen Challenge Fundraiser Coordinator Erica Sloan said the run will benefit the women at their facility.
According to previous coverage, Teen Challenge is a residential ministry for women 18 and older who struggle with life controlling issues such as drug and alcohol addiction.
“So many women call here for help with no money to enter the program,” Sloan said. “We hate turning people away and this fundraiser helps with that.”
The women are required to commit to one year at the center, previous coverage states. They also stay on the premises and participate in Bible study, character study and work ethics training.
The center has also established a new work program called Finishing Touches where the women refurbish used and donated furniture, Sloan said. The items are then sold at their booth in Poplarville’s Rusty Roosta and at markets. Proceeds from sales go right back into the program.
“The program has taught the girls skills and gives them a sense of confidence,” Sloan said.
The center hosts a variety of fundraising events throughout the year including a bunny brunch. There is also a spa event held for different women’s groups, Sloan said. They are pampered with manicures and pedicures.
“We live by faith and fundraising keeps our doors open,” Sloan said.
The event is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. on Oct. 3. The cost per runner is $25. To register, visit www.active.com or contact Sloan at 601-795-8063.
