Cassandra Favre Picayune Item Friday night, the Poplarville Hornets broke their two-game losing streak with a 42 – 8 win over the Lumberton Panthers. The Hornets dominated the entire game beginning with the first half. Poplarville had control of the ball first and the first touchdown was scored in the first five minutes of the game by Hornet fullback Jesse Pernell. The Hornets defense kept the Panthers caged during the first quarter. With less than a minute left in the first quarter, Pernell scored once again bringing, ending the quarter with a score of 14-0. The second quarter began with a sting, when Hornets cornerback DJ Travis intercepted the Panthers ball. Poplaville split end Tristan Nichols caught a 40-yard touchdown. However, the play was no good because of a flag on the play, illegal downfield. With less than five minutes in the second quarter, the Panthers fumbled the ball and it was swiftly recovered by Hornets linebacker Tyler Fricke at the Panther’s 46-yard line. Tailback Austin Bolton ran 46-yards into the end zone for a touchdown, but there was another flag thrown on the play, this time for running toward the sidelines and cutting back in. That touchdown was subsequently invalidated. The Hornets recovered from the setback when Bolton scored again. Without a penalty on the play, the touchdown and followup PAT brought their lead up to 21-0. With three minutes left in the first half, the Panthers once again fumbled the ball and it was quickly recovered by Hornet defensive end Dalton Richardson at the Panthers’ 30-yard line. A personal foul called on the Panthers gained the Hornets 15 more yards down field. Pernell found himself again in the end zone with 1:44 left in the first half. The half time score was Hornets 28, Lumberton 0. The Hornet’s defense was strong at the beginning of the second half and halfway through the third quarter, the Panthers had yet to score. With 6:19 left in the third, Hornets running back Sye Blossman brought the team’s lead to 35-0. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Hornets once again began on a high note with a touchdown by running back Chris Fowler, which brought the score to 42-0. With 5:33 left in the game, Panthers safety Daylon Burks scored the team’s first and only touchdown of the game. Panthers’ wide receiver Jonathan Walley ran the ball in for a two-point conversion. The final score was Poplarville 48, Lumberton 8.
