The community gathered for a prayer on Wednesday during the fourth annual Interdenominational Picayune Prayer breakfast hosted by the Picayune Knights of Columbus Council 6872.

More than 60 people attended the breakfast, which began with an invocation and readings from the New and Old Testament, Grand Knight Bryan Cassagne said.

“While the turnout was lower than last year, the program itself was awesome this year. A number of people said it was our best in terms of the speakers and the messages we were able to deliver,” Cassagne said.

The keynote speaker was Deacon Chris Schneider from St. Margaret Mary in Slidell. Guests enjoyed prayer over a traditional breakfast, including biscuits, scrambled eggs, grits, sausage, coffee and juice.

The Knights of Columbus raised an estimated $600 during the prayer, Cassagne said. The money raised will go toward the Ronald Cassagne Memorial Scholarship fund, which honors Cassagne’s father, who was a longtime youth activist. Since 2007, the council has awarded more than $19,000 in scholarships to college-bound students, according to previous Item coverage.
