We’re lucky we live in a small town where we have so many opportunities to give back to one another.
Two upcoming events—the Mud Run, August 22 and on August 15, the 5K fun run to benefit the Picayune Dancers’ trip to New York City—are only a couple of the upcoming opportunities for giving back to our neighbors.
For those who do not know, the Mud Run is organized by the local Christian nonprofit group No Turning Back, which funds student mission trips and the 5K and a 1-mile run will send some of our high school dancers to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and both are big opportunities in the lives of young people.
But of course, these events wouldn’t happen without the good people in our community who themselves care enough to organize and host these events.
Besides those fun events, we’re also proud of Picayune residents who volunteer every day in large or small ways, improving our community by doing those things for free that some would not do for money. Communities are as good as the people in them, and we are all fortunate to have some generous and warm people in our community.
So often communities that are neglected or beset by violence and crime are also afflicted with something even more pernicious: indifference. And so you need not look very far to see communities where residents don’t care enough to get involved and make a difference but lucky for us all that we do not live in a community like that. Our community cares about itself and about others.
We hope to see you all out at some of these fundraiser events. We can’t expect everyone to organize his or her own event, but with so many great ways to take part in wholesome and worthwhile community activities, we do hope that many of our readers will take some time and take part.
