Wednesday, the Mississippi Department of Education re-released the 3^rd grade Reading Summative Assessment scores originally released Friday.

The original report showed Pearl River Central Upper Elementary School was the only school in the county to have 100 percent of their students pass, according to previous Item coverage.

However the Item learned that one child did not pass after the child’s mother sent in a news tip. Pearl River County School District Superintendent Alan Lumpkin confirmed one child currently attending PRC didn’t pass the assessment.

Patrice Guilfoyle, communications director at the Mississippi Department of Education, said the department wasn’t aware of that when they released the score.

“When we report percentages, those numbers are normally rounded up so it wouldn’t have reflected that one person didn’t pass,” Guilfoyle said.

Guilfoyle said the department revised the scores to accurately portray the passing rate by changing the 100 percent passing rate to 99.5 percent.

The department posted the revised score on their website.

“I’m extremely proud of our students and teachers for the hard work and preparation they put into the test. It has paid off and a high percentage of students passed the test,” Lumpkin said.

Lumpkin also said the goal at PRC is to achieve a 100 percent passing rate without rounding up.

Even though the mother sent in the tip, she has not responded to attempts by the Item to hear her side of the story at press time.
