Yesterday, the Pearl River County SPCA received two juvenile animals at the shelter.

Picayune resident Manny Schaubhut brought in a young owl he discovered outside his friend’s home a few days ago.

“I left it alone but after the third day, the owl looked kind of weak, it looked like his mother left him, so I took him in and called a rehabilitation center in Ocean Springs and they told me to bring it to the shelter,” Schaubhut said.

The shelter also received a young opossum, which was brought in by someone in the community, PRC SPCA Director of Community Outreach Rhonda Furby said.

“There’s maggot eggs on the opossum, which means his mom was probably dead, so she wasn’t able to take care of the opossum,” Furby said.

Furby immediately transported both the opossum and the owl to River Bend Veterinary Hospital in Diamondhead, where the owl was deemed healthy. While there’s no news yet on the opossum, Furby said they will both be taken to the Wildlife Care and Rescue Center located in Gautier, Miss.
