The Pearl River County Board of Supervisors met Wednesday to discuss options on regulating garbage trucks and approving an expansion for the Pearl River County Hospital and Nursing Home.

District IV Supervisor J. Patrick Lee said he’s received complaints from residents in regard to overloaded garbage trucks dropping garbage on the streets.

“If someone is going to pick up garbage, they have to have the right equipment and the truck has to have a tarp,” Lee said.

District II Supervisor Malcolm Perry said, “I don’t want to make it hard for them to make a living, but all we want to do is keep the garbage in the truck.”

After the board discussed the topic further, they decided to establish regulations or revise those already in place. The goal is to require garbage collection companies to apply for a permit.

“As well as show proof of insurance and place requirements on these trucks,” Lee said.

In other news, the Pearl River County Hospital and Nursing Home requested approval to transfer three modular buildings for the hospital’s use.

Hospital representative Dawn Stuit said the current location for the hospital’s Intensive Outpatient program clinic, the old Juvenile Detention Center, is too small. As a result, they are only able to serve 10 paying patients.

In order to help more patients, Stuit said the hospital would like to place one of the modular buildings next to the old jail beside the JDC, and the other two beside the hospital-owned Family Practice Clinic on Highway 11.

“It will bring in more revenue and help us keep the place going,” Stuit said.

The board approved the transfer of the modular buildings to the hospital.

Also at the meeting, Pearl River County Emergency Management Director and Fire Services Coordinator Danny Manley sought approval to purchase a tanker fire truck for the Carriere Fire Department.

He said the department plans to apply for a $70,000 reimbursement from the state. The board approved the request and signed the application for the reimbursement.

In other business, the board:

– Approved personnel changes in the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department.

-Acknowledged a monthly report from the road department for January 2015 and approved their request to purchase two boom mowers.

– Approved a motion to declare Friday, April 3 Good Friday as a holiday.

-Approved travel for the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department to Traffic Crash/Homicide Investigation in Gulfport, Miss. from May 11-22, travel to Miss. Command College Training in Oxford, Miss. from July 25-Aug. 1, travel to Writing Search Warrants in Biloxi, Miss. from Mar. 18-19, and travel to Crisis Negotiation for First Responders in Pearl, Miss. from April 1-2.

The next board meeting will be on Monday, March 2^nd at 9 a.m.
