Unemployment falls in Pearl River county

Pearl River County’s unemployment rate in August was in the top 25 for the state.
According to information released by the Mississippi Department of Employment Security, Pearl River County’s unemployment rate for the month of August was 7.2 percent, which is a decrease from July’s rate of 8 percent. Overall, the rate puts Pearl River County 23rd on the unemployment list out of 82 counties. A year ago the county’s unemployment rate was 7.9 percent.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the state of Mississippi in August was 7.9 percent, a decrease from the previous month’s revised rate of 8 percent. In August of 2013 Mississippi’s adjusted unemployment rate was 8.6 percent.
Nationwide, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in August was 6.1 percent, a slight decrease from July’s revised rate of 6.2 percent.
A year ago in August the nationwide seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7.2 percent.
Seasonally adjusted rates factor in patterns such as weather, holidays, school schedules and other occurrences that regularly affect employment rates. Only nationwide and statewide percentages are adjusted.
Mississippi’s unadjusted rate for August was 7.4 percent, the report states. The state’s unadjusted revised rate for July was 8.6 percent.
Mississippi’s unadjusted rate for August 2013 was 8.3 percent.
Nationwide, the unadjusted unemployment rate in August was 6.3 percent, a decrease from July’s rate of 6.5 percent. In August of 2013 the unadjusted unemployment rate in the United States was 7.3 percent.
Of Mississippi’s 82 counties, 29 reported rates less than or equal to the statewide-unadjusted average of 7.4 percent. Rankin County reported the least amount of unemployment with 4.4 percent. Jones and Scott counties followed with a rate of 5.2 percent.
Clay County reported a population of the most unemployed with a rate of 15.7 percent while Holmes County reported the second highest rate of 15.4 percent.
