At Nick’s Meat and Deli, owner Nick Adelfio, aims to bring the freshest meat possible to the residents of Picayune.
The shop opened in February and Adelfio said business has been good and he’s had no complaints.
Adelfio grew up in Chalmette and graduated from St. Bernard High School.
After graduation, he worked for Cooper T Smith tying up ships on the Mississippi River and for American Crescent Elevator, Adelfio said.
He moved here in 1998 and started working in Winn-Dixie meat and produce departments.
Adelfio said his father, Sal, owned Picayune’s Coonies Meat Market for about five years until he retired.
It was then that Nick and his wife Mary decided to re-open the deli.
“Since I was a kid, I always wanted to open my own little store to give people fresh meat,” Adelfio said.
Adelfio sells US Choice cut to order steaks and ground meat. All of the meat offerings are lean.
The ground meat is made fresh everyday, Adelfio said.
Nick’s offers a variety of freezer specials, which include fresh ground meat, sausage, pork chops, sirloin steak, spare ribs, chicken and roast.
Nick’s features a variety of homemade sausages, including red stag deer, Italian pork, Italian, hot, Cajun, alligator, crawfish, green onion and chorizo.
Homemade spicy and mild hog head cheese is sliced to order.
Whole pigs, goats, hindquarters, red deer and ham are available via special order.
Cold cuts, including salami, cheese and chicken are also offered.
Adelfio stocks milk, butter, cheese and cheese spread from Lumberton’s Country Girl’s Creamery.
In the next few weeks, Adelfio said he plans to offer sandwiches to go.
“I want to give the people of Picayune good, fresh meat, and give them the kind of food that I would want to eat,” Adelfio said.
Nick’s is located at 235 Highway 11 South.
Deli hours are Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The business closed Sunday and Monday.
Nick’s Meat and Deli accepts EBT cards and all major credit cards except American Express.
