Local diner Betty K’s, located at 700 W. Canal St., opened 24 years ago in December of 1990.
The establishment currently employs eight and is known for their delicious food and low prices.
Owner Betty Kendricks began her career in the restaurant industry by purchasing Zesto’s, six years prior to opening Betty K’s.
“I had always wanted to own a place like Zesto’s and when I heard that they wanted to sell the business, I called them immediately,” Kendricks said.
“They were delighted to sell the business to me and I kept it open until I changed locations and opened under my own name, Betty K’s.”
Betty K’s offers freshly prepared dishes that range from chili, hamburgers, hotdogs, grilled chicken salads.
A daily deal adds a new offering each day of the week.
Hamburgers cost $2.25 and are made fresh on the grill, while meals like the hamburger steak or beef stew are priced between $4 to $6 .75.
Kendricks loves to work with young people and is proud of the fact that some of her workers have become physicians, nurses or hold Ph.D.s in various fields.
She said her regular customers know they will have their order waiting on them by the time they get to their table.
These personal touches are what sets the business apart.
Customers have the option to call in their orders ahead of time, allowing them to pick up their food through the drive through.
A family owned and run business, Kendricks and her daughter, Joan, take care of the day to day operations. The camaraderie does not end there; they consider their staff and customers part of their extend family.
“We try to keep our prices low and treat people the way that we want to be treated,” Kendricks said. “That is how we have remained in business as long as we have and have kept our customers returning.”
