Alcorn State in SWAC finals

Alcorn State and Southern University will play Sunday in the championship game of the Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball tournament in Shreveport.
The 1 p.m. final will be televised on ESPNU.
On Friday, Alcorn defeated Texas Southern 13-0 to reach the title game.
Cole Vicars (2-3) picked up the complete-game win. He allowed seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Southern banged out 16 hits and beat Jackson State on Friday night.
Southern overcame an 8-3 deficit after five innings. The Jaguars scored three runs in the sixth, four in the seventh and four in the eighth.
• Also, Jackson State pitcher and third baseman Desmond Russell has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s Freshman of the Year).
Russell started all 47 games in his rookie season at third base and on the mound. He finished the regular season second on the team with a .317 batting average and led the team with 11 doubles and 43 RBI. On the mound he made 15 appearances with a 4.04 ERA and a 4-6 record.
Mississippi players on the First Team All-SWAC were shortstop Jerry Hildreth and third baseman Scott Hornstra of Mississippi Valley State; outfielder Charles Epperson of JSU and designated hitter Kilby Perdomo of Alcorn State.
On the second team were pitchers Steve Easter of ASU and Desmond Russell of JSU; catcher Jose Cruz of JSU, first baseman Eduardo Gonzalez of ASU, third baseman Thomas Brown III of JSU and outfielder Michael Lowe of MVSU.
