AGs: Backpage.com should drop adult service ads

Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood has joined 20 other top prosecutors in asking another classified ads website to drop its adult services section.

The attorneys general on Tuesday signed onto a letter asking Village Voice Media-owned Backpage.com to develop better safeguards to keep prostitution and child trafficking ads out of other sections.

Attorneys general in Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia also signed the letter.

Hood and the others have also taken on Craigslist, which this month shut down its adult services section under pressure from prosecutors concerned that it was being used to promote prostitution.
