Picayune knocks off PRC

After falling to arch-rival Pearl River Central in the bottom of the final inning Friday, homestanding Picayune turned the tables on the Blue Devils Tuesday night.
Mark Wood delivered a one-out run scoring single in the bottom of the seventh, giving Picayune a 2-1 win in Division 8-5A action. The game was the last district game of the season for the two teams.
Wood singled home Terrance Freeman, who led off the frame by getting hit by a pitch. Devin Hedgepeth then reached on a single, setting up the heroics by Wood, who took the loss in a 4-3 defeat to PRC in eight innings Friday night.
Hedgepeth had a double in the third inning, and Jacob Taylor singled him home to make it 1-0 Maroon Tide.
The Blue Devils, who clinched the district championship with Friday’s win, tied the game up at 1-1 when Wade Manning drove in Caleb Morales with a squeeze play in the top of the fifth.
Peyton Lee picked up the win for Picayune, going the distance and allowing just two hits. He also struck out four.
Chance Putnam also went the distance for PRC and took the tough luck loss. He allowed six hits, including two by Taylor and two by Hedgepeth. It was the fourth one run loss for Putnam on the season.
Dylan Spiers and Lane Fazende each had a single for PRC, accounting for their only hits.
Pearl River Central will host Poplarville in a doubleheader beginning at 4:30 on Friday.
The Hornets beat Hattiesburg 2-1 Monday night behind a two-hitter from Chance Seals as he picked up the pitching win. J.J. Welch had two hits and drove in a run in the winning effort for Poplarville.
Poplarville has already wrapped up a berth in the Class 4A South State playoffs.
Picayune, which is the number two seed in Division 8-5A and will face Moss Point in the opening round of the Class 5A South State playoffs next week, will play Hattiesburg Monday night at William Carey.
PRC has aded a game with Oak Grove next week in preparation for the playoffs as well.
