Big games on tap tonight

Picayune puts its nine game win streak on the line tonight when St. Stanislaus comes calling.
The Maroon Tide-Rockachaw clash is just one of several games on the baseball or fast-pitch softball diamond tonight involving local teams.
Picayune and SSC are both tied at a perfect 6-0 in Division 8-4A play coming into the week, and tonight’s winner will take sole possession of second place in the league standings behind Long Beach.
In other local baseball action, Pearl River Central travels to Bay High and Poplarville travels to D’Iberville tonight. Both games are also Division 8-4A contests.
PRC is coming off a loss to Long Beach on Friday in which Aaron Lee had a double for the Blue Devils, and then PRC split a doubleheader with Petal on Saturday losing 14-1 before winning 5-4. In game one, Ryan Revette took the loss but had an RBI-single and in game two Dustin Dennis picked up the win with a complete game performance while Ramsey Graham singled in Brant Graham with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. PRC is 4-12 overall and 0-8 in league play.
Poplarville dropped three games in the Hattiesburg Spring Break Tournament Friday and Saturday, falling to Hattiesburg 11-2, Clinton 9-2 and Heritage Academy from Rogers, Ark., 7-6 in extra innings. Taylor Carr, Eric Ladner and Jade Whitten took the losses for the Hornets, while Carr and Eli Frierson each had a double in the loss to Rogers and Derrick Martin had two singles in the loss to Clinton. The Hornets are 1-14 overall.
On the softball diamond, Poplarville hosts Pearl River Central tonight. The Lady Hornets are 17-1 on the season and ranked third in the state and are coming off four straight wins in the Clarkdale Tournament over the weekend that took place in Meridian. Megan Ladner took two wins and Rachel Hickman got the two other victories as Poplarville beat Eupora 8-1, Union 10-2, Mendenhall 15-1 and shutout two time defending Class 5A state champion South Panola 6-0. Lead-off hitter Brandi Rester had a big tourney at the plate for Poplarville. PRC is coming off a 7-0 loss to D’Iberville and is looking for its first league win.
Picayune is hosting Long Beach in a Division 8-4A game tonight as well. The Lady Tide is coming off a 4-1 loss to Columbia on Saturday, and stands 8-12 overall and 1-5 in league play. Mallorie Mixon tripled in Brooke Meitzler for Picayune’s only run.
