The Poplarville Board of Aldermen is asking local businesses, politicians and private citizens to evaluate the use and placement of signs within city limits.

With the appearance of the city a high priority to aldermen, especially in this growth period, aldermen agreed it needed to make a plea to citizens to reevaluate some of their decisions in sign placement and design.

John Grant brought up the issue of the city’s sign ordinance at the Jan. 2 meeting, discussing with Mayor Billy Spiers and the other aldermen that many signs in town are in violation of that ordinance.

Of particular note, Grant cited a new café on Mississippi 53 thathas its sign in the state right-of-way, which is not only a violation of city codes but is in violation of state statutes.

Grant is urging citizens to closely monitor where signs are being placed so as to not interfere with city and state rights of way.

With many citizens using utility poles to post “for sale” and “yard sale” signs, the board is particularly urging those citizens to please remove their signs from utility poles.

With elections being two months past, the board said it is time for politicians to remove their signs from the city as well.

The Poplarville board meets at 5 p.m. the first and third Tuesdays of the month at City Hall.
