The family of a University of Southern Mississippi alumnus who died after playing beer pong at the Sigma Nu fraternity house in 2004 has reached an out-of-court settlement with the fraternity and the university.
Sammy Broadhead, a Sigma Nu alumnus and Southern Miss grad, attended a party June 25, 2004, at his old frat house on the Hattiesburg campus. A drinking game called beer pong required participants to drink large amounts of alcohol. Broadhead, who was 25, collapsed from high levels of alcohol consumption and later died.
Dana Covert of Meridian, Broadhead’s mother, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the fraternity and Southern Miss. The monetary terms of the settlement were sealed.
Southern Miss officials did not have a statement on the settlement late Thursday. Sigma Nu could not be reached.
