Mississippi city refuses to start citizens’ review panel

Moss Point city leaders have refused the NAACP’s request to reinstate a citizens’ review board to help investigate what the civil rights group says are growing allegations against the police department.

The board would be made up of volunteers and would review complaints against city officials. Moss Point had a citizens’ review board before Hurricane Katrina, but it was never reinstated after the storm. Jackson County NAACP president Curley Clark had asked city officials to create one.

The board didn’t get a second on the motion to reinstate the review board. Mayor Xavier Bishop said he believes that many of the allegations behind the movement were unwarranted.
