Reb quarterback still not on campus

Quarterback Brent Schaeffer will not be on campus at Mississippi until at least he end of July, according to his mother.
Schaeffer, who was named the Rebels’ starting quarterback on national signing day, is at home in South Florida finishing his junior college online coursework.
Coach Ed Orgeron, during a Wednesday interview with a Jackson radio station WJDX, confirmed Schaeffer’s arrival had been delayed.
The athlete’s mother, Chandra Schaeffer, said her son must complete six hours of correspondence courses before he can enroll at Ole Miss. She said her son should finish in time to be eligible to play this fall.
“He’ll probably be there by the end of July,” his mother, Chandra Schaeffer, told The Commercial Appeal newspapers of Memphis and The Clarion-Ledger of Jackson.
“He knows what he has to do,” she said.
Practice begins in early August at Ole Miss and the Rebels’ first game is Sept. 3 against Memphis in Oxford.
Attending summer school is not a requirement for the junior college transfer to be eligible this fall.
He must complete and pass the two correspondence courses to be the Rebels starting quarterback when the season begins, which his mother said shouldn’t be a problem.
Schaeffer began his career at Tennessee and played as a true freshman before a season-ending injury. Following his freshman season, Schaeffer transferred to The College of Sequoias, a two-year school in Visalia, Calif.
Last year, he threw for 2,975 yards with 40 touchdowns and just six interceptions, while also rushing for 854 yards and 12 TDs. Schaeffer led the Giants to an 8-3 record. He chose Ole Miss over North Carolina State and Wisconsin.
During his freshman season at Tennessee, Schaeffer, in the 2004 season opener, completed 7 of 10 passes for 123 yards, and rushing for 29 more on seven carries while splitting time with Erik Ainge.
Schaeffer finished the season completing 18 of 37 passes for 302 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He also had 66 yards rushing on 33 carries.
Ole Miss opens against Memphis on Sunday night, Sept. 3.
