City officials met Wednesday at Mildred Mitchell Park to discuss a potential site for the Picayune Skatepark Project. Parks and Recreation Director Trevor Adam, City Engineer Devin Hedgepeth, Public Works Director Ronnie Spiers, and Councilmember Jan Stevens met with Jacob Guthrie and Pete Taggart, who lead the project.

The group examined the west side of the park as a possible location for the skatepark, with plans to relocate existing swingsets. Additionally, discussions included acquiring land to the south to expand parking and enhance park amenities.

Officials emphasized the importance of community involvement and fundraising efforts. Given the project’s visibility on social media, they anticipate strong public support.

“This has gained a lot of traction online,” said Guthrie. “I believe businesses and community members will step up to help, whether through donations or sponsorships.”

The city will place the skatepark grant application on the agenda for the upcoming council meeting. The grant process will proceed if approved, and preliminary design work will begin. Once funding is secured, a final design and construction timeline will be developed.

The proposed skatepark aims to be an inclusive space that meets accessibility requirements, including WCMX (wheelchair motocross) accessibility.

“We’re not just building a skatepark; we’re creating an active sports venue,” Guthrie said. “It will be a space for roller skaters, BMX riders, and more.”

City leaders remain optimistic about securing funding and community support for the project, which they hope will provide a safe, designated space for local skateboarders and athletes.
