On Monday, the Pearl River County Board of Supervisors approved the purchase of approximately 40 new Motorola radios for the Sheriff’s Office. The decision, made during the board’s meeting, will address issues with deputies’ current outdated equipment.
The new radios, purchased with funds from a $356,338.40 COPS federal grant, come with a 10-year warranty and include necessary subscription services. The Sheriff’s Office has faced challenges as many deputies lack functioning radios, and parts for the old equipment are no longer available due to end-of-life status.
Under the Stonegarden Grant, the subscription cost could be covered after seven years, potentially reducing future expenses. Annual service fees are expected to remain a few thousand dollars per year. Motorola, the only manufacturer of these radios, ensures functionality and support throughout the 10-year warranty period. After the warranty expires, the department can adjust or eliminate specific service aspects as needed.
