A satellite station for the Nicholson Volunteer Fire Department caught fire Monday night, damaging the fire trucks and equipment kept inside.

According to a press release from the Pearl River County Emergency Services, the fire occurred Monday at about 10:52 p.m. on July 11, 2022. Firefighters were notified by Pearl River County Central Dispatch of the structure fire at the satellite location of the Nicholson Volunteer Fire Department, located at 2776 Jackson Landing Road, in the Nicholson area.

Personnel and resources from five fire departments, including Picayune Fire Department and Pine Grove Volunteer Fire Department, responded. The fire was quickly extinguished by those personnel, but three fire trucks of various sizes and several items of fire fighting equipment were destroyed. No injuries were reported as a result of this incident, however the building suffered extensive structural damage. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation at this time, the release states.

Pearl River County Emergency Services Director Shawn Wise said that as of Tuesday arson was not suspected as a cause, but the investigation is underway with assistance from the State Fire Marshal’s office.

Wise added that while the structure is still standing, it might be classified as a total loss.

Inspection of the site showed one large fire truck suffered significant damage, making it inoperable. Pearl River County Fire Marshal Jonathan Head said some of the equipment may be salvageable.

Wise said he would like to thank the firefighters who responded to the fire and for doing such a good job in putting it out quickly.
