For the past 35 years, Robin Dean has been using her skills in cosmetology to help people look their best. She is the owner and operator of Scissors Edge in Picayune.

Originally from Nebraska, Dean said she moved to Pearl River County in 1995 and fell in love with the town because its small size, personable people and welcoming nature reminded her of her home town.

In her time as a cosmetologist, she has held licenses in Alabama, Virginia, Louisiana, Texas and now in Mississippi.

Dean said in addition to the families that come to get their hair cut or colored, she also has a number of special needs clients. She even offers free haircuts to babies receiving their very first haircut because she likes to form a relationship with the young people to help them overcome the anxiety of getting their hair cut.

In addition to accepting appointments, she also welcomes walk-in customers, and provides private services to help people get ready for weddings, proms, homecoming and private parties.

Scissors Edge also has a couple of other stylists she rents space to. Unlike some of the corporate owned hair styling businesses, she only asks that they provide a percentage of their total business for the day.

“So if they only bring in two dollars, I only get a percentage of two dollars,” Dean said. “I’m trying to help those girls build a business for themselves.”

Scissors Edge also offers facial waxing, and sells some locally produced products. Dean has local honey for sale in the business, along with some homemade soap and monogrammed items.

Customers can also find hair straightening products and other hair care items.

Dean said that while she has been providing cosmetology services to the area since she moved here, she has been a business owner for the past five years.

Previously, Scissors Edge was located along Highway 11, but this September she moved to a new location along Memorial Boulevard next to Pet Sense.

The business is open Monday through Wednesday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
