A Mobile, Ala., woman led Hancock County Sheriff’s Department deputies on a chase from the Stennis Space Center buffer zone area to Interstate 59 where she led them across state lines several times.
Maj. Chris Russell said the incident occurred Wednesday just before noon. At about that time, deputies reponded to a call for assistance from a federal agency in the buffer zone to assist with a traffic stop.
Before the deputy could make contact with the driver of the vehicle, she fled down Texas Flat onto Highway 607 and eventually turned onto Interstate 59 where she made a number of u-turns north and south along the interstate, Russell said.
Eventually she turned off the interstate at exit 1, where another deputy had put out stop strips. Russell said the strips flattened two of her tires, causing her vehicle to come to a stop about a half-mile down the road. Hancock County jail records state the woman was identified as Joewanna Latrice Bevery, 37, of Mobile, Ala. She was arrested for eluding a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and reckless driving. No injuries were reported.
