Poplarville customers of Mississippi Power Company are being offered assistance to help potentially lower their power bills.

The city’s Board of Aldermen heard from Arnie Williams, director of economic development for Mississippi Power Company.

Williams described the company’s Neighborhood Efficiency Program, which allows customers to ask for an energy audit.

“One of the biggest factors for higher energy bills is no or too little insulation in the attic,” he said. He added that they “call a third party to help get the insulation up to where it should be.”

Williams said door tags containing contact information to set up an audit are being hung, and that the audit is free. Installation of the insulation is also free if the audit shows the service is needed. The service is not based on income.

He said the company is also offering a service that places cameras on poles for free, and allows the city to lease them for use by law enforcement.

Interim Police Chief Joseph Stuart mentioned vandalism in the park and suggested the cameras could be used there.

Williams said they could and all video would be readily available for law enforcement access.

The Board also approved mobile home renewals for Margo Travis on 901 S. McGehee and for Terrance L. Morgan on 111 N. Hughes Street.

Board members also approved a request to display temporary banners along the intersection of Highway 26W and Highway 11 advertising a fundraiser that will benefit the PRCC men’s and women’s basketball team.

The request to allow a farmers market at City Square Park on March 7, 2019 from 2 until 6 p.m. was approved. It is anticipated that six to 12 vendors will attend the event.
