Poplarville topples Greene County 31-14

Poplarville—— The Poplarville Hornets started district play on a high note Friday by defeating Greene County 31-14.
The Hornets moved to 5-1 on the year and are now 1-0 in district play.
The first half was somewhat of a stalemate as the only score in the half was a 14 yard field goal from kicker Ethan Spiers with 9 seconds left in the half.
The Hornets’ offense would start the second half rolling as on their first drive Antonio Barnes completed with a 44 yard touchdown pass to Cannan Ray to make it a 10-0 game.
Poplarville’s next drive would end with a 5 yard touchdown run from Ethan Taylor to make it 17-0.
Greene County would respond with a touchdown when Jacob Mitchell hit Drake Henderson for the score.
Poplarville would respond with a 53 yard touchdown run from Barnes to add on to their lead.
Greene County would counter with a 3 yard touchdown run from Blake Eubanks.
Barnes would once again punch back for the Hornets with a 13 yard scoring run.
Barnes had over 150 total yards of offense and 3 touchdowns for the Hornets.
The story of the night however was Poplarville’s defense suffocating Greene County, giving up only 9 rushing yards and 121 total yards of offense.
