The Backpacks N July event held Saturday at Crosby Commons filled 300 backpacks with school supplies that will be distributed to disadvantaged children locally.

Event coordinator Danny Zimmerli, a member of Life Church, said he decided to organize the event after his pastor’s sermon inspired him to take action by giving to the community rather than receiving, Zimmerli said.

After hearing about the shortage of school supplies among disadvantaged children in the community, Zimmerli organized the event at Crosby Commons, which featured live music, food vendors and a variety of jewelry, arts and crafts. Children engaged in a variety of activities, including building blocks, face painting and bounce houses.

Cash and supply donations were collected from the community.

Picayune native Kristin Robinson said the event was a great opportunity for the community to come together in support of children in need. She said she donated a bag full of folders, markers and crayons to support the cause.

Retired teacher Roxanne Moran said she has seen firsthand what children go through when they don’t have the items they need for school.

Life Church Pastor Leo Burge said they were overwhelmed with the response from the community, especially since it was an inaugural event.

Burge said church members plan to hold the event again next year and hope to be able to fill 600 backpacks.
