Picayune Farmers Market on the rise

This year’s Picayune Farmers Market brought in several new vendors. Offering a variety of unique items and locally made products, the event gives community members access to products not readily available in retail stores.
The event is hosted by Goodyear Baptist Church and began on April 14. It will last until later this year.
Donna Wise, administrative assistant at the church, said the market has grown considerably this year, attracting more vendors and customers.
She said the event began the season with 10-12 vendors. Now, about 18 vendors participate and she expects more to join in the coming weeks.
Additions to the Picayune Farmers Market include homemade greeting cards and homemade bread, Wise said. Soon, customers can expect to find handmade wreaths, jewelry, gluten free bread and locally roasted coffee, she said.
Last year, the event featured eight vendors.
Crops have also been better this year, which helps bring in more vendors and customers.
“It feels wonderful to offer our community this as an outreach program,” Wise said.
If anyone is interested in being a vendor during the final weeks of this season’s farmers market, Wise said the cost is $10 per spot. Potential vendors will be asked to fill out an application. Applications can be obtained by calling Goodyear Baptist Church at (601) 798-6193.
