Along Highway 11 in Picayune a new donut shop has opened, offering breakfast foods alongside an item that’s new to town.
Mach Chang and her boyfriend Hvun Rahlan opened Picayune Donuts Breakfast and Kolaches about a week ago, and she said in that short time the response from the community has been good.
After moving to town from Waveland, they decided to open a new business in Picayune. Chang said it took them about three months to get the building ready to meet their needs.
The new item, a kolache, can be described as a sausage filled pastry similar to, but larger than pigs in a blanket.
While the description is accurate, a kolache is filled with sausage rather than a hot dog. Chang sells her kolaches filled with regular sausage and cheese, jalapeno sausage and cheese, a sausage patty and cheese or with boudin.
Chang said she first heard of kolache while visiting her son in Texas about six years ago. During the visit, she tried the dish and liked it so much she tried to emulate it.
Using her son as a taste tester, she tried several dough recipes until she got it right. Chang said she uses her own recipe for the donuts as well.
Just like the donuts, the kolache dough is made fresh daily using her recipe.
Picayune Donuts Breakfast and Kolaches also offers biscuits with sausage, ham or bacon with egg and cheese. Croissant breakfast sandwiches are also on the menu with the same ingredients as the biscuits.
The business is open Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from 6 a.m. to noon. Picayune Donuts is located at 718 Highway 11 Suite B, and staff can reached by phone by calling 769-242-0067.
