There are many places where people can camp in and around Pearl River County, providing adventurous opportunities to spend quality time with family and friends.
To make a camping trip more enjoyable, representatives with Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks has some tips to keep in mind.
Josh Carver, the marketing and communication coordinator at MWFP, said that it is a good idea to plan a camping trip in advance.
While on a camping trip, Carver said that is important to have enough water on hand to stay hydrated especially during the summer. Packing bug spray and sunscreen is also a good idea, he said.
Hiking the trails is a popular day activity for campers, Carver said. When visiting one of the many camping facilities, be sure to get a map of the trails to avoid getting lost. Carvers said that the proper gear is important, including hiking shoes and long sleeved clothing.
Snakes are prevalent in the outdoors, which includes South Mississippi camp sites, Carver said. While hiking through trails or in the woods, be mindful of where feet fall.
“Camp with a buddy, but if you go alone make sure to inform somebody when and where you are going and when you plan to be back,” Carver said.
Several state parks in South Mississippi have prime opportunities for fishing, Carver said.
