According to Southern Transportation District Commissioner Charles Busby, several major road and bridge improvements are progressing across south Mississippi as the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) prepares for a busy summer construction season.

“As we approach the busy summer construction season, it’s exciting to see steady progress throughout the region,” Busby said. “We expect the next few months to be very productive and look forward to a few significant projects wrapping up and others beginning, all of which will ultimately improve roadway safety and enhance vital corridors for the traveling public.”

Among the most notable efforts is the $21.9 million bridge replacement project on U.S. Highway 11 over Hobolochitto Creek in Picayune. Crews have placed beams in preparation for pouring the bridge deck, signaling key progress on the structure.

The new bridge is being built adjacent to the existing one to reduce traffic interruptions during construction. Cotton Creek Transport of Laurel was awarded the project, which is expected to be completed by late 2025.

Commissioner Busby said MDOT is committed to keeping motorists informed and safe as work intensifies in the coming months.
