Picayune Mayor Jim Luke secured the Republican nomination Tuesday night, defeating challenger Jerry Bounds with 52.7% of the vote. Luke received 713 votes to Bounds’ 639, according to unofficial results.
With no Democratic or independent challengers, Luke will run unopposed in the general election this summer, effectively securing another term in office.
In District 2, Terrilyn L. Griffith won the Republican primary in a landslide, defeating Michael Marks with 72.7% of the vote. Griffith received 125 votes, while Marks received 47. She will face two opponents in the general election: Democrat Dimitri Johnson and Independent Lynn Bogan Bumpers, both of whom qualified without facing primary opposition.
In District 4, incumbent Councilman Larry Breland held his seat in the Democratic primary, defeating challenger David Brumfield with 63.5% of the vote. Breland received 162 votes to Brumfield’s 93 and will face no opposition in the general election.
The Republican race in District 5 remains too close to call. Josiah Hickman leads Frank H. Ford by 11 votes—238 to 227. With all precincts reporting but absentee and affidavit ballots still to be counted, election officials have not yet certified the outcome.
District 1 Republican Anna B. Turnage and District 3 Republican Janice Miller Stevens advanced without opposition. Turnage is unopposed in the general election, while Stevens is expected to face no challengers.
The general election will be held later this year to determine the final makeup of the Picayune City Council. District 2 remains the most competitive race, with three candidates vying for the seat.
