A man has been charged with murder and multiple other offenses after officers responding to a possible overdose call discovered a fatal shooting late Wednesday night.

At approximately 10:09 p.m. on Feb. 12, officers were dispatched to Fern Drive after a caller reported that someone appeared to have overdosed and was seen running toward a white vehicle, according to law enforcement officials.

As officers approached the area, they observed two vehicles with flashing lights on Martin Luther King Boulevard near Kingsway Drive. An officer spotted a man, later identified as Tyler Wilcox, walking away from the cars. When Wilcox turned around, officers noticed a handgun in his waistband.

According to police, Wilcox displayed erratic behavior and, at one point, asked officers if they wanted to shoot him before grabbing the handgun and throwing it nearby. Officers reported that his speech was incoherent and that he refused to follow commands. After a brief struggle, Wilcox was tased and taken into custody. He told officers he had been “laced” with an unknown substance and was transported to Highland Community Hospital for treatment.

While en route to the hospital, dispatch received another call from Fern Drive reporting a deceased individual on a carport. Officers arrived at the residence, a short distance from where Wilcox was detained, and discovered a male victim who had been shot. Investigators also determined that the residence had been fired upon.

Wilcox was quickly identified as a suspect and has been charged with murder and attempted murder. Authorities later updated charges to include shooting into a dwelling, attempted home invasion, and possession of a stolen firearm.

The investigation remains ongoing.
