A Picayune man is behind bars after a major drug bust uncovered firearms, illegal substances, and eight alligators in his backyard pool.

Ryan Howard, a Glenwood Street resident, was arrested following a collaborative investigation by Picayune’s Special Operations Division (SOD) and the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana. The investigation culminated in a search warrant executed at Howard’s home, where authorities discovered 51 pounds of marijuana, anabolic steroids, six ounces of mushrooms, 13 vials of marijuana seeds, packaging materials for drug distribution, and 14 firearms.

Adding to the unusual findings, eight alligators were in Howard’s backyard swimming pool. The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks has since taken custody of the animals.

The investigation began weeks earlier when SOD detectives received tips about Howard’s alleged illegal activities. The case gained traction when St. Tammany Parish deputies arrested Howard and his minor child in Louisiana. Authorities said the pair were transporting 80 pounds of marijuana, believed to be destined for Picayune. That arrest provided crucial evidence for obtaining the search warrant.

“This is an active investigation, and more charges against Howard and others are likely,” police said. Howard currently faces charges of trafficking a controlled substance, with additional charges expected as the case unfolds.

Law enforcement emphasized their commitment to keeping Picayune safe, stating, “We will not rest to ensure our city—and even the alligators—are safe.”

The Picayune Police Department thanked St. Tammany Parish deputies and all officers involved in the case for their hard work.
