Authorities in Picayune and Poplarville have implemented curfews in response to severe winter weather that has made travel dangerous across South Mississippi.
The Picayune Police Department announced a curfew within city limits from 6 p.m. on Jan. 21 to 7 a.m. on Jan. 22. To ensure public safety, residents are urged to remain indoors during these hours.
Poplarville officials have also enacted a curfew from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m., advising residents to “stay home, stay safe” as freezing temperatures and icy conditions continue to impact the region.
In addition to the curfews, the Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) has reported significant road closures and hazardous conditions, making travel nearly impossible in several areas. As of 3 p.m., state troopers had responded to 73 calls for service. Authorities are strongly advising against travel unless necessary.
Icy Road Conditions Reported:
- Pearl River County: Hwy 53 from Hillsdale through Poplarville to the county line.
Residents are encouraged to monitor official updates from local law enforcement and emergency management agencies as conditions evolve. Officials emphasize that travel should be avoided unless necessary.
