Authorities Warn of Holiday “Brushing Scam” Targeting Residents

Local law enforcement officials warn that scammers are capitalizing on the holiday season with a new scheme called “Brushing Scam. ” Similar incidents have been reported in Itawamba County and Magee, and authorities are working together to raise awareness and protect residents.
The scam involves the delivery of unsolicited packages containing items such as rings, bracelets, necklaces, or Bluetooth speakers. These packages, often associated with online retailers like Amazon, are addressed to unsuspecting recipients but lack information about the sender.
A QR code sometimes included in the package makes the scam particularly dangerous. The code promises to reveal details about the sender or the gift but allows scammers to access the recipient’s phone, stealing personal and financial information. As a result, victims may face drained bank accounts and compromised sensitive data.
“If you receive an unexpected package, do not scan any QR codes inside,” a local law enforcement official advised. “You can keep or dispose of the item, but scanning these codes can put your security at serious risk.”
Authorities emphasize that QR code scams extend beyond packages. Similar schemes involving fake QR codes on parking meters have been reported, further highlighting the need for vigilance.
Officials urge residents to remain cautious about unsolicited packages and avoid scanning unfamiliar QR codes to protect themselves. Sharing this information with family and friends is a simple but effective way to prevent becoming victims of the scam.
“We appreciate the collaboration with other departments in spreading the word about these scams,” the statement continued. “Stay vigilant this holiday season and safeguard your information.”
