The Poplarville Board of Aldermen has approved an application to develop a Travel America (TA) truck stop at 70 Balmoral Drive, following a proposal submitted by Jones O’Gary Development through representative Tom Jones.

At Tuesday’s board meeting, Pearl River County Economic Development Director Lindsay Ward emphasized the new truck stop’s economic advantages.

“Anytime there is a new investment in the community, it has a rippling economic impact on the surrounding region,” Ward said. “The investment in the site and the taxes generated to support the school system and our government are all greatly needed. The investment at Exit 27 will bring in additional visitors and revenue to our community.”

Mayor Louise Smith supported the project, citing the truck stop’s expected contributions to the local economy and infrastructure.

“The Travel America Center will offer immediate and long-term benefits, ranging from job creation and infrastructure improvements to enhanced safety and economic diversification,” Smith said. “I believe the Travel America Center will be a valuable asset to our local economy and provide essential services to our citizens, travelers, and truckers.”

The TA truck stop is anticipated to generate jobs and increase revenue for Poplarville and the surrounding Pearl River County area, contributing to economic stability and providing a new rest and service point for travelers along the I-59 corridor.
