United States Attorney Todd Gee announced today that Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs) Bert Carraway and Samuel Goff will lead efforts in connection with the Justice Department’s nationwide Election Day Program for the upcoming general election on November 5, 2024. Appointed as District Election Officers (DEOs) for the Southern District of Mississippi, Carraway and Goff will oversee complaints related to voting rights concerns, election fraud, and threats of violence against election officials.
“Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination and have that vote counted in a fair and free election,” Gee stated. “Similarly, election officials and staff must be able to serve without being subject to unlawful threats of violence. The Department of Justice will always work tirelessly to protect the integrity of the election process.”
The Justice Department’s Election Day Program, part of its efforts to ensure election integrity, aims to protect voters from intimidation, threats, and discrimination and to prevent election fraud. Federal law prohibits intimidating voters, tampering with ballots, and threatening election officials. The program also provides local points of contact for reporting election violations.
