Picayune Defeats Pascagoula 38–28 in District Opener

The Picayune Maroon Tide earned a 38–28 win over the Pascagoula Panthers on Friday night, moving to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in district play. The game saw multiple lead changes, with Picayune taking control in the second half.

Pascagoula opened the scoring with a 65-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Christian Campbell, going up 7-0. Picayune responded with a 7-yard rushing touchdown from Darrell Smith, tying the game at 7-7 with 4:02 left in the first quarter.

The Panthers retook the lead on a 66-yard touchdown pass to Campbell, making it 14-7. Picayune answered with a 30-yard touchdown run by Smith, evening the score at 14-14 as the first quarter ended.

In the second quarter, Pascagoula went ahead with a 1-yard rushing touchdown, bringing the score to 21-14. Picayune missed a 39-yard field goal attempt late in the first half, leaving the score unchanged at halftime.

Picayune tied the game at 21-21 early in the third quarter with a 52-yard touchdown run by Smith. Later in the quarter, they took their first lead when B.J. Ducre caught an 8-yard screen pass for a touchdown, putting Picayune ahead 28-21.

A field goal extended Picayune’s lead to 31-21 in the fourth quarter. Pascagoula narrowed the gap with an 8-yard rushing touchdown, making it 31-28 with 6:32 remaining. Picayune closed the game with a 48-yard rushing touchdown by Smith, bringing the final score to 38-28.

Picayune will face West Harrison next week in a district matchup at 7 p.m.
