The City of Poplarville has announced a project to replace its outdated water meters with advanced electronic models. The project aims to improve accuracy and efficiency in water usage measurement. The replacement program will help address issues of inaccurate billing and enhance overall water management for residents.

The new electronic meters will provide real-time water usage readings, detect leaks more quickly, and allow the city to monitor usage remotely, reducing the need for manual meter readings. The initiative will result in more accurate billing and improved water conservation efforts.

“Replacing these outdated meters is necessary in modernizing our infrastructure,” said Mayor Louise Smith. “The benefits include more precise billing, enhanced water conservation, and a system that aligns with our city’s long-term plans.”

The project is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA) in partnership with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). Poplarville has allocated $500,000 of its ARPA funds, matched through a 2-1 collaboration with the MDEQ’s Mississippi Municipality and County Water Infrastructure Grant. The funding structure allows the project to proceed with minimal financial impact on the city and its residents.

The new meters will be installed in October 2024 and rolled out in phases over the next year. Residents will be notified in advance of installation schedules. Work crews will be identifiable, and customers will be informed of any temporary service interruptions during installation.

This replacement project is part of Poplarville’s ongoing efforts to improve water services and manage resources more effectively.
